A Poets View

I have heard many opinions in regards to finding the right niche for your writing.  While I do believe as writers we all have personal styles which suit us more comfortably than others,  I do think that writing in one particular genre is very limiting. 

Being an expert on one subject is great but why not branch out and try new topics and new avenues for your writing expertise.  I know many people who have begun as poets and branched out into screenplays, fiction and writing news copy.  It’s all about learning and exploring new areas of writing.  By learning we grow both spiritually and professionally.  Expanding our understanding into new fields of writing not only affords more opportunities but allows us to delve into the limitless possibilities growing within our imaginations.   We can integrate our knowledge of one genre to another.   If we write news copy for a living and decide to try poetry our knowledge of facts and storytelling can help us in designing a poem rich in metaphor and story value.  If on the other hand we are poets and want to try news copy or fiction we have the ability to write the news or story using our expertise as poets to write a more creative story or news piece.  To me it’s like being a tree.  The tree as the writer with branches reaching out to other genres and leaves holding the bits and pieces you’ve learned just waiting and ready to be cast to the wind, sharing your knowledge with the world.

It’s about constantly learning and applying what you have learned into your writing.  So, never slump into one niche.  Branch out and explore.  It will make you a better writer.
